What can I choose in the calculator?

The calculator lets you choose the share of the passenger transport demand covered by Public Transport in Switzerland in the selected year (2035 or 2050).

IMPACT – What are the impacts of Public Transport?

In Switzerland, increasing the share of public transport will have the following impacts:

Energy system

image Reduce final energy demand.

image Increase total electricity consumption.

image Reduce total diesel / gasoline consumption.

image Likely to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix.

image Likely to raise pressure on the grid by increasing (peak )electricity demand.

image Likely to increase energy independence and energy security.

Environment & Climate

image Very likely to reduce global CO2 emissions.

image Avoids emissions of harmful pollutants, especially in urban areas.

image Reduce noise pollution.

image Likely to increase deposited waste and environmental impacts related to mining and end of life treatment of batteries

Society & Economy

image Likely to have limited impact on the cost of the energy transition.

image May improve balance of payments by substituting oil imports by domestic electricity.

image Reduce Confederation income from the tax on mineral oil under the current taxation system.

GLOBAL CONTEXT – What is the trend in Public Transport use in the EU?

Person transport activity (in person-kilometre pkm/year) in Switzerland increased from 13,811 in 2005 to 14,413 in 2012. This is slightly above the EU average, which increased from 12,854 to 13,121 between 2005 and 2011. [1][2]

In 2012 the average share of public transport in the total pkm motorised transport activity was 20.8% in Switzerland (excluding aviation), up from 19.9% in 2005. For comparison, in 2011 the EU average share of public transport in the total pkm motorised transport activity was 17.5% (excluding aviation), down from 17.7% in 2005. [3][4]

DEFINITION / CONSTRAINTS

DEFINITION - What is Public transport?

The “Public transport use (%)” slider determines the share of total passenger-distance travelled by public transportation modes (train, tram, metro, bus, cabled transport and boat).

In 2012, the public transport activity totalled 24.1 billion passengers-kilometres (pkm), split over the different modes as follows: train (80.4%), tram and metro (4.7%), bus (12.9%), cabled transport (1.3%) and boat (0.7%). [1]

CONSTRAINTS - What are the key barriers facing Public transport deployment?

• The existing infrastructure is reaching its maximum capacity but new infrastructure is increasingly expensive.

• Some locations are hard to serve with public transport.

• Some psychological barriers are difficult to overcome – some people don’t want to compromise on autonomy.

ASSUMPTIONS – What are the assumptions considered in the calculator?
