Coal (find out more)

At the present moment there is no coal fired power plant for electricity production in Switzerland. Nonetheless, improved and cleaner coal power plants are forecasted to play a substantial role [1]. Various technologies are available for coal power plants: PC (Pulverised coal, subcritical), SC (Supercritical), USC (Ultra-supercritical), A-USC (Advanced Ultra-supercritical), IGCC (Integrated gasification combined cycle). The table below represents the assumed penetration for these technologies for 2050. It is assumed that no Subcritical power plant would be planned for construction, as the technology is the least efficient and forecasted to be phased-out.

Coal Power Plants capacity share [%] [1]
Type 2035 2050
SC 20 0
USC 60 60
A-USC 20 35
IGCC 0 5

Coal Power Plants can integrate Carbon Capture and Sequestration systems (CCS). The data for efficiencies and emissions of the Coal Power Plants with and without CCS comes from the NEEDS project. In the report [2] and the LCI database [3], there are three different forecasts for each technology and year (2025 or 2050): Pessimistic (PE), Realistic optimistic (RO) and Very optimistic (VO).

Next table includes the efficiencies for the different kinds of coal power plants together with the scenarios that have been selected for the years 2035 and 2050 in the calculator.

Electric efficiencies [%] [2]
2035 2050
Technology No CCS CCS No CCS CCS
PC38 (2011)
SC46 (2011)
USC52 (2025VO)45 (2025VO)54 (2050RO)49 (2050RO)
A-USC52 (2025VO)45 (2025VO)54 (2050RO)49 (2050RO)
IGCC54 (2025RO)48 (2025RO)54.5 (2050RO)48.5 (2050RO)

The table below contains the data set that has been used for the IPCC07-100a and Deposited waste calculations. In the LCA database [3], each data set has several scenarios. The chosen scenario for the model is shown in the previous table.

USCNo CCSelectricity, hard coal, at power plant 800 MW
CCSelectricity, hard coal power plant 500MW class post CCS, 400km & 800m aquifer
A-USCNo CCSelectricity, lignite, at power plant 950 MW
CCSelectricity, lignite power plant 800 MW class post CCS, 400km & 800m aquifer
IGCCNo CCSelectricity, hard coal, at IGCC power plant 450MW
CCSelectricity, hard coal IGCC power plant 400MW, CCS, 400km & 800m aquifer
