WHAT CAN I CHOOSE IN THE CALCULATOR?

The calculator lets you choose the share of BEVs in the total car fleet in Switzerland in the selected year (2035 or 2050).

BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLE (BEV)

image

IMPACT – WHAT ARE THE IMPACTS OF BEVS?

In Switzerland, substituting standard gasoline / diesel vehicles by BEVs of comparable size will have the following impacts:

Sistema Energetico

image Reduce final energy demand.

image Increase total electricity consumption.

image Reduce total diesel / gasoline consumption.

image Likely to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix.

image Likely to raise pressure on the grid by increasing daily peak electricity demand.

image Likely to increase energy independence and energy security.

Environment & Climate

image Very likely to reduce global CO2 emissions.

image Avoids emissions of harmful pollutants, especially in urban areas.

image Reduces noise pollution.

image Likely to increase deposited waste and environmental impacts related to mining and end of life treatment of batteries.

Society & Economy

image Likely to have limited impact on the cost of the energy transition.

image May reduce total cost of ownership of vehicles.

image May improve balance of payments by substituting oil imports by domestic electricity.

image Reduces Confederation income from the tax on mineral oil under the current taxation system.

GLOBAL MARKET – What is the global market for BEVs?

The global electric vehicle fleet (including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) reached over 180,000 units at the end of 2012. Global electric vehicle sales doubled between 2011 and 2012 but their market share is still below 1%.[1] The most successful BEV to date is the Nissan Leaf with over 100,000 units sold by January 2014.[2]

DEFINITION / CONSTRAINTS

DEFINITION - What is a BEV?

A BEV is a type of electric vehicle (EV) that runs exclusively on electricity as energy source.

A BEV has a battery pack that is recharged by plugging the vehicle to an external source of electricity (usually the electricity grid).

The battery pack delivers its electricity toan electric motor which transforms itinto motive power.

CONSTRAINTS - What are the key barriers facing BEVs deployment?

• Requires charging infrastructure for extended use, although home and workplace charging can cover part of the needs.

• Significantly shorter range than standard diesel/gasoline cars, exacerbated in cold conditions.

• Higher purchase price than equivalent gasoline/diesel car.

• Safety concerns for pedestrians due to very quiet operation.

ASSUMPTIONS – What are the assumptions considered in the calculator?

You will find more information about the passenger transport model of the calculator here.
