In Switzerland, increasing the population will have the following impacts:

image Likely to reduce the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix.

image Likely to raise pressure on the grid by increasing (peak) electricity demand.

image Likely to reduce energy independence and energy security.

Environment & Climate

image Increase emissions of harmful pollutants, especially in urban areas.

Society & Economy

image Increase the total cost of the energy transition. As population growth also drives economic growth, the relative impact of increasing population growth on the cost of the energy transition may be limited.

VALUE RANGE - WHAT RANGE OF VALUES CAN I CHOOSE?

The scenarios of OFS 2010 [3] have been used to define the future value ranges for the Swiss population: * 2035 = 7’8 – 9’8 million inhabitants * 2050 = 7’2 – 10’7 million inhabitants
